ICANN Amsterdam: working on for ICANN 2!

27 November 2006 11:39

The administers of the Internet Corporation Assigned Names and Numbers met in Amsterdam on last December 14 and 15 for a studying weekend. Less than a year after the calling to a “reform” done by Stuart Lynn, its president, the association decided deep modifications that would be able to have to refer to, in a permanent relation, all the Internet protagonists.

At the first place, finally the net users should be able to be represented in the ICANN thanks to the creation of At Large Advisory Committee (ALAC). This organism which gives resolutions directly to the ICANN Management counsel will be composed by the individual user representatives in the five areas in the World.

On the other hand, the ccTLDs (AFNIC from .fr on the head) asking for more autonomy in the ICANN with the creation of a CNSO (Country Names Supporting Organization), the GNSO from now will represent the gTLDs (like .com and .biz) (Generic Names Supporting Organization). It will take part of, in a strong way, the budget of ICANN 2 and it should be a solution on the biggest problem of the organization. On the other hand, the GNSO will be able to assume its own regulation: the practical consequences to the domain name owners are minimum by the moment, but they agree that the procedure of Law-suit Resolutions over generic domain names (UDRP) is a direct result of this kind of Regulations. A matter that should be watched, indeed!
