The ICANN internationalized!

27 November 2006 12:31

lWhen the el Australian Paul Twomey assumed his functions as president on last May, he converted this matter in one of his priorities: the ICANN must change in a global reality and leave its "Us-centric" image. They gave at least one more step with Paul Verhoef’s naming as Vice-president of “Supporting Organizations and Committee Support”. He comes from the European Commission where he controlled the international aspects in the General Direction of the "Information Society", he was seen, specially, very active and defending the role of the private sector in the sessions of the World Summit for the Information Society of the International Union on Telecommunications (WSIS), Paul will put an antenna of the ICANN in Brussels. It opens its first office in Europe.

The At-Large Committees, supposedly representatives of the final Internet users in the ICANN are organizing, too: with representatives in Europe, America and Asia, they hope to announce concrete actions during the next ICANN meeting in Rome on next March.

Will there be supporting signs toward Africa with this more international team? Paul Twomey was received almost as a State Chief! ¿? Does the ICANN seem to fly high? Maybe is the best meaning to the private sector if they want to resist the pressures of the Governments and the ITU?
